Meeting the stars: Lee Joon Gi and Kim Eun Ji
Lee Joon Gi as Kim Hui U
Kim Hui U is a bulldog prosecutor who pursues justice above all else. But when he goes after Cho Tae Seop, a powerful but corrupt politician, Tae Seop has him killed by Tae Seop’s private henchmen. But rather than dying, Hui U wakes up in front of a grim reaper who is eager to help Hui U get revenge on Tae Seop and all his evil cronies. The Grim Reaper sends Hui U back in time 15 years, but allows him to keep his memories.
Now Hui U will get a second chance to live his life, using his knowledge of the future to save lives, correct mistakes, and gain an advantage against his influential enemy. But each small shift in fate creates a new reality, different from the one he had lived before. And he will need to stay alert if he is to save his own life.
Kim Hui U is confident and charming. In his first life, he struggled through school to become a bottom level prosecutor. But with a chance to do it all again, he will work harder both in his education and his career, to give him the edge he needs to keep his life and punish his killer. I love Lee Joon Gi and he has a talent for playing characters who are charming yet still a bit rough around the edges. He’s also great in action dramas. I thought he was a perfect fit for this role.
Kim Ji Eun as Kim Hui A
Kim Hui A is the youngest daughter of the Cheonha Group. She has never been interested in the family company, and has left her brothers to run the business dealings while Hui A went to college to pursue her own interests. She has kept her family identity a secret, even from her close friends.
Kim Hui A meets Hui U when they are students and the two become friends. She has watched her father do business with Cho Tae Seop for years, and she has never trusted him. So, when she finds out that Hui U is determined to expose Tae Seop and his illegal practices, she agrees to help him. She becomes the company heiress and begins to sever ties with Tae Seop and anyone associated with him. But the move will cause strife between her and her greedy brothers. And she will need to tread carefully if she and Hui U are going to be successful in bringing down their powerful enemy.
Kim Hui A is confident and righteous. She has always put famiily peace above her own aspirations. But when she realizes her brothers are following Tae Seop down a dangerous and corrupt road, she steps in to save the family’s business and integrity. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel like Kim Ji Eun got the screen time or character development to really shine in this drama. And this made her acting seem a bit stiff and unemotional.
Supporting characters
Lee Kyung Young as Cho Tae Seop
Cho Tae Seop is an assemblyman who has spent his career gathering power and allies through bribes and threats. He is responsible for Hui U’s death in his first life. So when Hui U comes back a second time, he is determined to get revenge on the corrupt politician.
Jung Sang Hoon as Lee Min Su
Lee Min Su is a senior classmate in the law department at Hui U’s university. Min Su takes an instant liking to the new student. The two become friends, and later when Hui U graduates, he ends up working with Min Su. But Min Su has a revenge plan of his own, and when their plans eventually lead them in opposite directions, the two agree to respectfully follow different paths.
Hong Bi Ra as Kim Gyu Ri
Kim Gyu Ri is someone Hui U knew in high school. In Hui U’s first life, Gyu Ri falls on hard times and dies, but Hui U changes her fate in his second life. They become friends and attend law school together. Later, she will become a strong ally for Hui U, using her skills as a prosecutor to help Hui U punish Cho Tae Seop.
3 things i loved about ‘Again My Life’
1.
Action Scenes:
Anyone who follows Lee Joon Gi’s social media accounts knows that he is an incredibly skilled martial artist. And because of that, it always gives me a special dose of joy watching him do action scenes, knowing it’s all really him. It’s just so fun to watch him spin and glide!
2.
Grim Reaper:
I thought the Grim Reaper interpretation in this drama was really interesting. The idea that she had the power to give Hui U a second chance was unique. And I loved the fact that he was able to meet and recognize her in his new life, even if she didn’t know who he was. I also thought Cha Joo Young created a coldly elegant character that fit the role perfectly.
3.
Friend Network:
I thought Hui U’s support system was a fun element in this drama. From the guys who seemed to idolize him to the girls that all seemed to be crushing, they formed an important layer to the story and Hui U’s ultimate success.
3 things i didn’t love about ‘Again My Life’
1.
“Romance”:
It seems like they would have been better off leaving romance out of this series completely. As it was, it felt forced and thrown in randomly. I didn’t sense any romantic chemistry between the leads. It would have made more sense to leave her as just another ally and friend.
2.
Sci-Fi Focus:
Once the first few episodes were done, I felt like this drama lost its sci-plot. Honestly, it could have been just a regular revenge drama and still accomplished almost everything the plot showed. I wish they had continued to draw the story back to Hui U’s original fate and the ways he used that knowledge to beat Tae Seop.
3.
Ending:
For me, this ending felt rushed and just generally unsatisfactory. The main bad guy seems to just disappear into the ether and may or may not be dead. There was an engagement, but surprise there wasn’t really an engagement, but surprise again, we’re dating. What? I felt like the elements for a strong ending were there, but the writers really seemed to fumble it. Also, what about the whole Ji Hyeon and the brother with amnesia story. Way to throw that in during the last 15 minutes of the show, with no real explanation. And how about Min Su’s story? Just too many loose ends for me.
The Conclusion of 'Again My Life'
The Ending
‘Again My Life’ ends with Hui U finally exposing Tae Seop during a live debate. And once the debate is finished, Ji Hyeon steps in to provide her personal recordings as further proof. Tae Seop limps home where we see a rare glimpse of humanity, as he calls for Ji Hyeon and Jin Woo before realizing he is all alone. Later we hear that he has disappeared, but a body that looks like his is found floating in the ocean. Staged perhaps, but we will never know.
Ji Hyeon’s betrayal leads to a final showdown with Jin Woo. And when Hui U finally defeats him, we learn that he and Ji Hyeon are actually siblings. But Jin Woo has no memory of their childhood or their relationship. So Hui U spares Jin Woo’s life, and Jin Woo and Ji Hyeon are both arrested for their roles in Tae Seop’s crimes.
During the debate with Tae Seop, there are two important developments. First, Hui U announces he will run for public office against Tae Seop. And second, he announces that he is engaged to Hui A and has her backing for his candidacy. Later the whole gang gather for a feast and debriefing. We learn that Hui U does indeed become an assemblyman. And Hui U and Hui A announce that, although their original engagement was just a ruse, they have since started to date for real. Since they feel so bad for everything they have put their friends through, they offer the whole group, including Hui U’s parents, a free trip to Bali on Cheonha Group’s private plane. Let the tropical fun begin!
My Personal Thoughts and Ratings
‘Again My Life’ is a fantasy crime drama that offers a story of intrigue and revenge. It has a large cast of talented characters, headed by the ever-charming Lee Joon Gi. The action scenes are exciting and well choreographed. The drama brings a lot of themes together, merging legal drama, political intrigue, and fantasy revenge.
Unfortunately, the drama was often predictable and a bit bland. None of the characters seemed to go through any growth or change from start to finish, and the lead female was not especially engaging. There were too many side stories, which left plenty of loose ends and underdeveloped plot lines. But this drama had its fun moments, and honestly I never get tired of watching Lee Joon Gi do action scenes. I give ‘Again My Life’ an 7 out of 10 ramen.
