The Story

A chaebol in a vicious fight for succession encounters a problem when he finds out his artificial heart is running out of batteries. But when he runs into a woman who was struck by lightning as a child, he learns that she can somehow charge his heart battery. So he offers her a contract with a large payout if she will simply stay available whenever he needs to recharge.

The Leads

Kim Young Kwang as Baek Ho Rang

Baek Ho Rang is the grandson of TS Group. He and his cousin. Do Yun, are in a fierce competition to prove to their grandmother, Chairman Kong, that they should inherit the family company. But when Ho Rang finds out that his artificial heart is running out of battery and can't be repaired right away, he worries that his chances may be ruined. He hides his condition from his family as he searches from a solution.

His answer comes from an unusual source when he meets a young screenwriter named Bo Bae, who mysteriously recharges his battery with her touch. Ho Rang draws up a contract with Bo Bae that she will make herself available whenever he needs to be charged. At first, he sets up his office in her family coffee shop, but eventually he moves her into his house and brings her to work with him during the day. And the longer they live together, the closer they become. When an emergency moves Ho Rang's surgery up, Bo Bae's "powers" suddenly become a danger to Ho Rang's life. But he isn't sure he can live without her either.

Ho Rang is a sharp businessman and a ruthless competitor. Losing his parents when he was young also made him emotionally closed off and insecure. And his dysfunctional family only added to his cold disposition. But when he meets Bo Bae, he opens his heart for the first time and learns how to trust someone. I'm always a huge fan of Kim Young Kwang and it was kind of nice to see him back in a light-hearted rom-com after taking so many intense villain roles.

Chae Soo Bin as No Bo Bae

When No Bo Bae was young, she was struck by lightning. Since that time, she gives off an electrical current that makes it impossible for anyone to touch her. As an adult, she becomes a romance screenwriter who can work from home. But because she has never been able to date, she can't seem to write good romantic scenes. After finishing a tough meeting with her director, Bo Bae collides with a man running from reporters. Shockingly, he doesn't seem to be fazed by her electric touch. But when she tries to confirm what happened, the man runs away from her.

Later she meets Baek Ho Rang again. And this time they are able to prove that miraculously he isn't hurt by her touch. But it does help him by charging his artificial heart. He asks her to help him by becoming his own personal charger. And she agrees to do it if he will help her by fulfilling her dating bucket list. And, of course, their contract relationship quickly becomes very real. But when Ho Rang gets surgery to fix his heart and his doctor tells Bo Bae she shouldn't see him anymore, she begins to worry that her presence is too dangerous, even though her "powers" seem to gone.

No Bo Bae is quiet and kind. Because of having to be careful around people, she has always lived more as an observer. Although she has always dreamed of dating and getting married, she gave up the idea years ago. Now she gets her romance through the pages she writes. But it's hard to be convincing when you have never experienced any of it first-hand. Which is why she asks Ho Rang to help her experience it, even if it is fake. Chae Soo Bin is so cute and lovable. I thought she was adorable in this role and the her chemistry with Kim Young Kwang was great. Their height difference only accentuated their cuteness!

Supporting Characters

Cha Woo Min as Ji Eun Ho

Ji Eun Ho is an actor who starred in Bo Bae's debut film. He fell in love with her during the filming. When he confessed her feelings, Bo Bae turned him down. But he has continued to stay in touch and support her. Now he has become famous, but he has never gotten over Bo Bae.

Jung Jae Kwang as Choi Do Yun

Choi Do Yun is Ho Rang's cousin. He has always been jealous of Ho Rang and would go to any lengths to keep Ho Rang from taking over TS Group. Do Yun's parents are counting on him to inherit the family business and continue to support them.  Do Yun is  also in love with Ho Rang's arranged fiance, Seol Hui. But she has never been interested in Do Yun.

Shin Do Hyun as Han Seol Hui

Han Seol Hui is the director of Hanlim Entertainment. She is also Ho Rang's first love. Ho Rang's grandmother still intends to have the pair get married and merge their companies. But Ho Rang lost interest in Seol Hui long ago, and slowly even his grandmother gives up on her.

Things I Like

Bo Bae's Family

I just love Bo Bae's family. Their support of Bo Bae is obvious in lots of little actions. I liked how subtly they made provisions for her with oven mits and air hugs. They never make her feel like an outcast or an inconvenience. It's great how they kept journals to document every case and anomaly over the years. Of course, they quickly see Ho Rang's sincerity, which also made them wonderful!

Yun Jae Ho Backstory

I really enjoyed Jae Ho's backstory about his sister. It gives some insight into why his loyalty to Ho Rang should never be questioned. It also shows us that Ho Rang has always been generous and thoughtful, even if he likes to hide it. It's not so much that Bo Bae brought out something in him that never existed. It's more that she taught him to embrace his true self.

Losing Powers

This drama never tries to logic it's way through an explanation of how or why Bo Bae's powers exist, and I think that is a wise decision. Instead it embraces the impossible and asks fans to come along, and I'm all there for it. Because of that, they also don't need to explain why they change. When Bo Bae meets Ho Rang, it sets off a whole new chapter in her life. Suddenly there is someone who is immune to her powers. It's a miracle. And that's why I loved the ending. Bo Bae loses her powers in another mystery ushered in by Ho Rang's presence and their fated relationship. Will they stay gone? No one knows and that's part of the beauty.

Things I Didn't Like

Chairwoman Kong

I can't help but blame the Chairwoman for the actions of Do Yun and his parents. At some point, she could have drawn a line and demanded fair play. But instead she reinforced the idea that she cared more about the results than the means. Thus giving them all permission to behave terribly. Ho Rang deserved better!

Ho Rang and Seol Hui

I was kind of curious about Ho Rang and Seol Hui's past relationship. They refer to Seol Hui as his first love, but even before Bo Bae came along, Ho Rang was holding Seol Hui at a distance and saying he didn't want to get married. So what actually happened with them? Did he just decide that she wasn't the one or was he just not interested in marriage at all. I feel like Do Yun's feelings may have also played a part in Ho Rang's actions but they didn't really give us much insight into how it all happened.

Ho Rang's Return

I felt like Ho Rang's triumphant return to TS Group is overshadowed by the rest of the story. We never get to hear whether he is successful in his pet project or how happy his loyal secretaries and staff must have been to have him back. Instead we get a quiet scene with Ho Rang and Secretary Yun and that's it.

The Ending

'Take Charge of My Heart' gives us a sweet happily ever after. Seol Hui rejects Do Yun's proposal, which causes him to throw a drunken tantrum and crash his car. We later hear that he has been arrested for drunk driving as well as  a whole laundry list of crimes. And since he has now dragged down the reputation of TS Group, Chairwoman Kong has dismissed him and reinstalled Ho Rong to his place.

After saving Ho Rang's life with her powers, Bo Bae no longer carries an electrical charge. At first, she tries to run away in case her powers come back and hurt Ho Rang. But he convinces her that he can't be happy without her by his side. She is finally having her drama produced. Seo Jeong is the director and Eun Ho has agreed to guest star in it. And despite her honest rejection of his feeling, Eun Ho is still her #1 fan. Her voice-over says she is still unsure about her future but is embracing it one day at a time. The final scene shows Ho Rang and Bo Bae at home as they sit together watching the premiere of Bo Bae's drama, 'The Bodyguard in My Heart'. And as her name flashes across the screen it is Ho Rang rather than Bo Bae who cries in happiness. Bo Bae says regardless of what the future brings, they will get through it as long as they have each other.

Should I Watch

'Take Charge of My Heart' is a sweet romantic comedy about finding healing and embracing the things that make you different. The 10 episode series is breezy and an easy binge-watch. The awkward lead characters are fun to watch and they have a great on-screen chemistry.

But this isn't a great series if you are looking for a complex, realistic love story. The far-fetched plot requires letting go of practical expectations. There is nothing especially new or note-worthy here. It's meant to be goofy, cute, and simple, and as long as that's what you're looking for, you shouldn't be disappointed. I know I wasn't. I give 'Take Charge of My Heart a 4 out of 5 ramen.
