The Story
A driven manager who has always put work above everything else, finds her life turned upside down after a drunken one night stand with a stranger ends up in pregnancy. When that one night stand turns out to be the CEO of her company, she realizes there is no way to hide the truth about what happened. And as the pair navigate their next steps and consider a shared future, they will have a chance to reflect on their own ideas of love, marriage, and parenthood.
The Leads
Choi Jin Hyuk as Kang Du Jun
Kang Du Jun is the heir of Taehan Group. But he owes his current positon to the fact that his older brother fell to his death while he and Du Jun were on a climbing trip together. Because of his brother's accident, Du Jun has been a stand-in father to his niece. But he has also allowed his sister-in-law to use his guilt as leverage in the family business and Du Jun's personal life. She has made sure Du Jun would never find love or happiness.
One night, Du Jun is out drinking with some friends when he meets a beautiful stranger, Hui Won, and the pair spend the night together. Later, he finds out Hui Won is pregnant and immediately asks her to let him take responsibility and even offers to marry her. But Hui Won isn't sure she wants him in her life at all. So, Du Jun sets out to win her heart and convince her to give their child a stable home.
Kang Du Jun is dependable and kind. He has grown up in privilege but he has never let it go to his head. He has been a great father figure to his niece and dependable son, but the loss of his brother has left a huge hole in his life. As he spends time with Hui Won, his heart starts to heal and he begins to feel alive again for the first time since his brother's death. I like Choi Jin Hyuk, and he plays this kind of upstanding businessman well. His acting style is a bit reserved, but it works in roles like this.
Oh Yeon Seo as Jang Hui Won
Jang Hui Won grew up with a single mother whose failed marriage has turned her into an emotionally distant alcoholic. Because of this, Hui Won has always sworn she would never get married. Now she works in the office of Taehan Liquor, a company owned by Taehan Group. She has devoted her life to her job and is a model employee.
After seeing her long-time crush get married, Hui Won goes drinking with some friends and runs into Du Jun. They are both drunk and decide to do something totally out of character by having a one-night stand. But later, Hui Won runs into Du Jun at work and realizes he is actually her boss. When Hui Won finds out she is pregnant, she is shocked, but she decides she owes it to Du Jun to at least let him know. She can't believe it when he offers to marry her, and immediately distrusts his motives. But as he goes out of his way to help Hui Won and prove his intentions are genuine, she slowly starts to fall for him.
Jang Hui Won is smart and well-grounded. She has substituted any desires for marriage and family by working hard at her job. But her distaste for marriage is more about fear and past scars than the institution itself. And as she gets to know Du Jun, he helps her restore her relationship with her mother and begin to find healing. Oh Yeon Seo loves to play these quirky types of roles, and it is one of her charms. Her subtly mannerisms are a good match for Choi Jin Hyuk, and although neither of them gave the performance of a lifetime, their subtle chemistry fit this story.
Supporting Characters
Hong Jong Hyun as Cha Min Uk
Cha Min Uk has been Hui Won's best friend since they were young. He lives in the apartment above Hui Won's house and has always had a crush on her. When he hears she is pregnant, he realizes that he is running out of time to confess. But he soon learns that it is already too late.
Kim Da Som as Hwang Mi Ran
Hwang Mi Ran is Hui Won's best female friend. The pair have been friends since college and Hui Won introduced her to Min Uk as well. Mi Ran has feelings for Min Uk, but she knows Min Uk only has eyes for Hui Won. As the situation unfolds, Mi Ran finally gets the nerve to confess to Min Uk, and although he is slow to accept her feelings, he eventually comes around.
Baek Eun Hye as Han Jeong Eum
Han Jeong Eum was married to Du Jun's brother. She holds Du Jun responsible for his death and ruining her life. She intends to have her daughter take over Taehan Group instead of Du Jun, and she will stop at nothing to make that happen.
Things I Like
Restoration
Although it was a bit heavy for a rom-com, I thought they did a great job of developing Hui Won's mother's story. We get to see her at her lowest, and although she was obviously a pretty terrible mother, I enjoyed seeing her overcome her own wounds to do better. She can't redo her daughter's childhood, and that is a pain she will just have to live with. But she can be a support to her adult daughter and a grandmother to her daughter's child, and that feels appropriate.
Niece
Se Hyeon was a nice character. I liked that rather than have her be the greedy heiress-wannabe or the mama's girl that just does whatever her mom tells her, she remains loyal to Du Jun. Her willingness to stand up to her mom and defend Du Jun is probably the only thing that could have saved their family and the business.
Trauma
Du Jun's inability to touch another person's hand was an interesting way to bring his trauma into his day to day life. As the rich chaebol, it was good to give him a physical, tangible weakness to help him feel more human.
Things I Didn't Like
Alcohol Company
I kind of feel like if you have a drama about a pregnant woman, making her work for an alcohol distribution company is a stange choice. Particularly when I read that is a change from the original webtoon. Why change it to something that feels strangely out of place? I mean, I get that her research is on non-alcoholic beers, but it just felt weird.
Sister-in-Law
I understand that Jeong Eum was devastated by the loss of her husband and unborn child. But to think that she can expect Du Jun to never live his own life or find any happiness seems unreasonable. He already sacrificed years of his youth to help raise Se Hyeon. I feel like he has done more than enough. After all this time, Jeong Eum should have become at least a little less delusional instead of more.
Pregnancy
For the fact that this whole drama started because of Hui Won's pregnancy, I felt like it didn't get talked about that much. You could almost forget that she was pregnant at all for most of the show. I think her coming to terms with motherhood could have been an important area of healing and a missed opportunity to develop her character more.
The Ending
'Positively Yours' ties everything up in a happy little rom-com bow. All the family dramas are smoothed over and everyone is reconciled. Du Jun and Hui Won have a private wedding ceremony with just the two of them in an empty church, and all is right with the world.
One year later, we see everyone having a party to celebrate their daughter's first birthday. Both families are there, including a reluctant Jeong Eum who is reassured by Se Hyeon that she is invited. The team from Taehan Liquor is in full attendance, with a very pregnant Sun Hui and her new husband, Secretary Ko. And Min Uk and Mi Ran show up arm in arm, looking like a happy couple, so I guess Min Uk has finally accepted Mi Ran's confession. Hui Won is excelling in her job and Du Jun is spening a lot of time at home taking care of the baby. The drama ends with Hui Won telling the audience that she is thankful for her new life and that she had found the love, support, and companionship she had always hope for.
Should I Watch
'Positively Yours' is a shotgun relationship romantic comedy. This is a sweet love story that tackles some heavy themes like guilt, childhood trauma, and views on parenthood. The plot is simple and straightforward, so this is a good choice for when you are looking for a drama that won't make you work too hard. The characters are quirky and the unconventional love story makes it unique.
But this is not a high-production drama. The filming and characters can be a bit cheesy at times. While this is billed as a romantic comedy, the heavy plot lines often bring down the mood of the drama and take the focus away from the romance between the leads. Because of this, the chemistry that starts strong between the leads in the opening episode slowly fizzles out. But if you want an easy distraction drama, this one has some cute moments. I give 'Positively Yours' a 2 out of 5 ramen.
